Hot off the heels of BlackBerry announcing iOS and Android compatibility coming for BBM comes a revelation that the offering will be limited to smartphones only. Vivek Bhardwaj, head of the BlackBerry Software Portfolio, stated that BlackBerry will focus on smartphones running iOS 6 and Android 4.0 or above for this summer’s launch only. “Smartphone is our real focus and again it comes back to what BBM is.” states Bhardwaj. “If you look at BBM and the engagement and the activity, it’s because it is mobile, because people are on the go.” This means tablet owners will not benefit from a tablet-supported BBM app until BlackBerry wishes to develop one. It is an odd move for BlackBerry as other messaging apps like Kik and WhatsApp already gobbling up users on a multitude of platforms utilizing smartphone and tablets alike.
